Oral Cancer Screenings
Oral cancer screenings are a very important part of your dental visit. We include a screening at every dental checkup appointment. The stage at which oral or pharyngeal cancer is diagnosed is critical to the course of the disease. When detected at its earliest stage, these cancers are more easily treated. Risk factors for oral cancer include tobacco use, alcohol consumption, HPV infection, age, UV light exposure and diet.
Scaling & Root Planing (deep cleaning)
Periodontal disease (gum disease) is an infection of the gums and bone that support the teeth. Left untreated, periodontal disease can become severe and can lead to tooth loss. It is often painless and you may not be aware of the disease until the gums and bone are severely damaged. It can be treated in the early stages by scaling and root planing.
Periodontal disease is caused by a buildup of bacteria in plaque and tartar that irritates the gum tissues that support the teeth. This leads to chronic inflammation, bleeding, and infection that destroys gum tissue and bone. Scaling and root planing removes the tartar and plaque attached to the teeth to stop the progression of the disease.
